What is Wi-Fi? Mobile Internet Communication

Wi-Fi is an enabling technology that cuts the costs to accessing your e-mail, the Web, and streaming media. Wi-Fi delivers broadband internet access to users wirelessly. It is a quick and convenient way to hop online at home, the office and when traveling. Places where you can access Wi-Fi networks are known as hotspots. Wi-Fi, or 802.11b, operates in the 2.4Ghz spectrum and supports speeds up to 11Mbps. There are two other protocols in the 802.11 space, including (a) and (g) that are publicly available, but 802.11b is the most common worldwide.

A Wi-Fi hotspot is created by installing an access point to an internet connection. The access point transmits a wireless signal over a short distance — typically covering around 300 feet. When a Wi-Fi -enabled device, such as a Pocket PC, encounters a hotspot, the device can then connect to that network wirelessly. Most hotspots are located in places that are readily accessible to the public, like airports, coffee shops, hotels, book stores and campus environments. Many homes and offices also have Wi-Fi networks. While some hotspots are free, the most robust public Wi-Fi networks are provided by private internet service providers (ISPs) that charge a fee for users to connect to the internet.
